Spanish fennel flower 'African Bride'
Nigella hispanica 'African Bride' is a striking and sophisticated version of the traditional 'Love-in-a-mist'. This hardy annual produces large, pure white flowers with prominent, dark purple-black stamens at the centre, creating a dramatic monochrome effect. Unlike the more common Nigella damascena, this species has more robust stems and slightly more substantial foliage. The flowers are followed by highly attractive, deep maroon, star-shaped seed pods that are excellent for drying and use in floral arrangements. In the UK, 'African Bride' is valued for its architectural quality and its ability to add a cool, contemporary feel to a summer border. It is easy to grow from seed, preferring a sunny spot with well-drained soil. It can be sown in autumn for earlier flowers the following year or in spring for a summer display. It is a magnet for bees and adds a touch of modern elegance to any cutting garden.
