Sweet-Scented Tobacco

This species of Nicotiana is prized above almost all others for its exquisite evening fragrance. Nicotiana suaveolens produces clusters of elegant, nodding, tubular white flowers with a pale green reverse on the petals. While the flowers may look somewhat modest during the day, they release a powerful, jasmine-like scent as dusk falls, designed to attract pollinating moths. The plant reaches about 60-90cm in height and has a more refined, airy habit than the more common N. alata. It is a half-hardy annual (H2) and should be sown under glass in early spring. It performs best in UK gardens when planted in a sheltered spot, ideally near an open window or a garden bench where its perfume can be fully appreciated during summer evenings. It prefers moist but well-drained soil and a position in full sun or light, dappled shade. It is a graceful choice for a white garden or a moon garden, adding both visual elegance and sensory delight to the late-season landscape. It adds a touch of wilder, natural beauty.
