Paperwhite Daffodil 'Ziva'
Narcissus papyraceus 'Ziva' is a Mediterranean native bulb that is iconic for its intense, sweet fragrance and pure white flower clusters. Unlike most daffodils, 'Ziva' is not fully hardy in the UK and is frequently grown as an indoor winter-flowering plant. However, in the mildest coastal regions of the South West and the Channel Islands, it can be successfully cultivated outdoors in a very warm, sheltered, south-facing border. It produces multiple stems per bulb, each topped with a delicate umbel of small, snowy-white flowers with tiny cups. When grown outside in the UK, it provides incredibly early interest, often emerging in late winter or very early spring. It requires well-drained soil and a summer baking to ensure the bulbs ripen and flower again the following year. In cooler regions, it is best treated as a temporary container plant or brought under glass for the winter. Its scent is powerful enough to perfume an entire patio area on a still day.
