Spiked Water Milfoil

Spiked Water Milfoil is an essential oxygenating aquatic perennial native to the UK. It features delicate, feathery whorls of olive-green foliage that reside primarily beneath the water's surface, providing vital cover for fish fry and aquatic invertebrates. In mid to late summer, it produces slender, reddish flower spikes that emerge just above the waterline. This plant is highly effective at absorbing excess nutrients, helping to maintain water clarity and combat algae growth. It is exceptionally hardy (H7) and thrives in still or slow-moving water. It prefers a sunny position but can tolerate partial shade. While it provides excellent ecological benefits, it should be managed in smaller ponds to prevent it from becoming overly dominant. Planting in baskets with aquatic compost can help control its spread while allowing its oxygenating properties to benefit the pond ecosystem throughout the growing season.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Aquatic compost or silt.

Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.

Flowering: Jun, Jul, Aug.
