Grape Hyacinth
Muscari latifolium, a more unusual grape hyacinth, stands out with its two-toned flower spikes. The upper flowers are a sterile, paler blue, creating a cap, while the lower, fertile flowers are a deeper, richer blue-purple. This creates a charming visual contrast. Unlike some of its more common relatives, it also features broader, strap-like leaves. Fully hardy and easy to grow, it thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. It's excellent for rockeries, front of borders, or naturalising in grass where it provides a delightful splash of spring colour. Its unique appearance makes it a worthwhile addition to any UK garden.
