Bee Balm 'Gardenview Scarlet'
'Gardenview Scarlet' is a vibrant herbaceous perennial that brings a burst of intense colour and ecological value to the UK garden. It is particularly noted for its improved resistance to powdery mildew, a common problem for Monardas in the British climate. The plant produces striking, shaggy, whorled flower heads of brilliant scarlet red from mid to late summer. These flowers sits atop sturdy stems reaching about 90cm and are immense magnets for bees and butterflies. The serrated, dark green leaves have a sharp, minty fragrance and can be used to make tea. This cultivar thrives in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. It is fully hardy (H6). Because it spreads via rhizomes, it can form large clumps over time and benefits from division every few years to keep it healthy and floriferous. It is an excellent choice for a prairie-style planting or a traditional herbaceous border where bold colour is desired.
