Bergamot 'Gardenview Scarlet'

Monarda 'Gardenview Scarlet' is an improved cultivar of the traditional bee balm, selected for its better resistance to powdery mildew—a common problem with Monardas in the UK. It produces large, shaggy heads of brilliant, fiery scarlet flowers that are held in prominent green bracts. The flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and long-tongued insects. The foliage is dramatically aromatic, releasing a scent similar to Earl Grey tea when crushed. Reaching about 90cm in height, it has a sturdy and clump-forming habit. It is fully hardy (H7) and prefers a position in full sun or very light partial shade. It requires a soil that is consistently moist and rich in organic matter; it will quickly suffer and become prone to disease if the soil is allowed to dry out. Dividing the clumps every three years is recommended to maintain vigour. It is a classic choice for the summer border, providing both intense colour and a wonderful fragrance. Its unique flower shape adds a touch of whimsy and texture to any herbaceous planting scheme.
