Purple Moor Grass 'Windspiel'

'Windspiel' (translated as 'Wind Play') is a tall and incredibly elegant Molinia that is perfect for adding height without density. It forms a basal clump of green foliage from which exceptionally tall, slender, and strong stems rise in mid-summer, reaching up to 2.5 metres. These stems are topped with airy, purple-tinted flower panicles that move gracefully in the slightest breeze. The plant is essentially transparent, allowing the gardener to see through it to other plants behind, making it a favourite for 'matrix' style planting. In autumn, the entire plant turns a spectacular, uniform buttery-yellow before eventually bleaching to a pale tan. It is a deciduous grass that is perfectly suited to the UK climate, particularly in areas with higher rainfall and slightly acidic soils. It is very hardy and structurally sound, staying upright through most of the winter. It should be cut back to the ground in February. Best grown in full sun to ensure the strongest stems.
