Brewer's Mitrewort strip

Mitella breweri is a charming, low-growing perennial that is perfect for the front of a woodland border or along a shaded path. It forms a neat mound of heart-shaped, evergreen leaves that are slightly hairy and a fresh green colour. In late spring, it produces delicate, upright spikes of tiny, greenish-yellow flowers. On closer inspection, these flowers are incredibly intricate, with petals that are finely branched like snowflakes. Native to the mountains of western North America, it is very hardy (H5) and thrives in the cool, moist conditions of a UK garden. It prefers a position in partial to full shade and soil that is rich in organic matter. While it is not a 'showy' plant in the traditional sense, its subtle beauty and interesting floral structure make it a favourite among woodland enthusiasts. It spreads slowly and is excellent for adding fine texture to a damp, shaded spot. It is generally pest and disease-free.
