Starry Sandwort
This choice alpine forms an incredibly hard, dense, hummock-like cushion of tiny, bright green leaves. In summer, the cushion is dotted with small, white, starry flowers. It is native to the high mountains of south-eastern Europe and is a masterpiece of compact growth. In the UK, it is highly valued by alpine enthusiasts for its architectural form, looking like a green moss-covered rock even when not in flower. It is best grown in a very gritty trough, a crevice, or in a tufa block to ensure the perfect drainage it requires. It is slow-growing and will never become invasive. It requires an open, sunny position and a gritty top-dressing to protect its neck. It is extremely hardy to cold but, like many cushion plants, can suffer if the centre stays wet for too long during a damp UK winter. It is a plant that rewards patient cultivation and close inspection, showcasing the extreme adaptations of high-altitude flora.
