Siberian Carpet Cypress

Microbiota decussata is an incredibly hardy (H7), low-growing evergreen conifer from the mountains of Siberia. It has a graceful, spreading habit with feathery, almost lace-like foliage that creates a dense, soft carpet. During the summer, the foliage is a bright, fresh green, but with the onset of winter frosts in the UK, it undergoes a dramatic colour change to a deep russet or plum-purple. This makes it a fantastic plant for winter interest. It is very versatile, thriving in both full sun and quite deep shade, although its winter colour is best in a sunnier spot. It prefers moist but well-drained soil and will not tolerate standing water. Due to its wide-spreading nature, it is an excellent choice for groundcover, rockeries, or for softening the edges of large borders. It is a low-maintenance plant that requires no pruning and is virtually pest and disease-free. Its unique appearance and extreme hardiness have made it increasingly popular in British gardens.
