Medlar 'Royal'

'Royal' is a productive medlar cultivar, similar in size and habit to 'Nottingham', forming a small tree or large shrub of 3-4m in height and spread. It produces good crops of medium-sized, roundish-pear-shaped fruits, which are 'bletted' after harvest in late autumn for their unique, sweet, custardy flesh. Hardy (H6) and adaptable to most well-drained soils, it fruits best in full sun. Its large white, sometimes pink-flushed, flowers in May are a beautiful feature, and the tree provides excellent winter interest with its architectural form and fruits.
