Virginia Bluebells
Mertensia virginica, commonly known as Virginia Bluebells, is a delightful clump-forming tuberous perennial that brings a charming display to UK gardens in spring. It produces nodding clusters of bell-shaped flowers that emerge pink in bud, then open to a stunning sky-blue, creating a beautiful colour transition. The delicate, oval, grey-green foliage is also attractive. These plants are perfect for woodland settings, shady borders, or naturalising under deciduous trees, as they are ephemeral, dying back gracefully by mid-summer after flowering, leaving space for later-season plants. They thrive in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and are relatively low maintenance. Virginia Bluebells offer a quintessential spring woodland feel and are a valuable early food source for pollinators.
