Grapefruit Mint

This fascinating mint variety offers a surprisingly authentic citrus aroma, strongly reminiscent of a freshly cut grapefruit. It is a vigorous, spreading perennial that grows to about 40–50cm tall, with large, rounded, slightly hairy leaves that often take on a reddish-purple tint in the sun. In the UK garden, it is a hardy and reliable performer (H7), flourishing in moist borders or containers. The fragrance is most intense when the leaves are rubbed or crushed, making it a great plant to site near a garden path. It produces spikes of lavender flowers in late summer which are attractive to pollinators. Due to its vigorous nature, it is best grown in its own pot to prevent it from outcompeting other herbs. It is perfect for infusing in iced tea, adding to summer fruit salads, or creating a unique twist on the classic mint sauce. It prefers a sunny spot but will tolerate light shade.
