Ginger Mint 'Variegata'
Mentha × gracilis 'Variegata', often called Ginger Mint or Scotch Mint, is one of the most beautiful variegated mints. It features bright green leaves strikingly streaked and splashed with gold. The plant has a somewhat more refined, less invasive habit than spearmint, though it still benefits from being contained in a pot. It grows to about 40-50cm tall and has a unique aroma that combines the freshness of mint with a distinct, spicy ginger undertone. This makes it particularly good for making refreshing summer drinks, fruit salads, or for use in chutneys. The lilac flowers appear in late summer and are attractive to insects. It is fully hardy (H7) and prefers a moist soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. In the UK, the golden variegation is most prominent in the spring and early summer; it may fade slightly in very high heat or deep shade. It is a wonderful dual-purpose herb, providing both visual interest and culinary novelty.
