Bastard balm 'Royal Velvet Distinction'
A beautiful and often overlooked native of European woodlands, this perennial is a member of the mint family but is far more refined and non-invasive. 'Royal Velvet Distinction' is a standout cultivar, featuring clusters of large, tubular, orchid-like flowers that are pure white with a dramatic, deep velvet-purple lip. These blooms are held in the axils of the rough, nettle-like, aromatic leaves. It is a magnet for bees and other pollinators. In the UK, it is highly valued for its ability to bring exotic-looking beauty to a shaded border or woodland edge. It is fully hardy and prefers a well-drained but moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade. It forms a tidy, upright clump that slowly increases in size over the years. This plant is a wonderful choice for gardeners who want something a little different that still fits perfectly into a naturalistic or woodland-themed planting scheme. It is reliably perennial and requires very little maintenance once established.
