Wood Melic 'f. albida'

A charming, delicate native of UK woodlands, this form of the Wood Melic is highly prized for its ethereal beauty in shaded garden spots. It forms low, spreading mats of narrow, bright green leaves that create a soft textured carpet. From late spring, it produces very slender, nodding panicles of tiny, pearly-white spikelets that seem to hover like small grains of rice above the foliage. These flowers catch the light beautifully in dappled shade, providing a sense of movement and lightness. It is exceptionally well-suited for underplanting trees or shrubs and for naturalising in woodland-style gardens. It prefers cool, moist conditions but is surprisingly tolerant of drier shade once established. Its refined appearance belies a tough constitution, being fully hardy across the UK. It is a slow to moderate spreader and non-invasive, making it a sophisticated alternative to more aggressive groundcover grasses. Maintenance involves simply cutting back old foliage in early spring.
