Stock 'Brompton Series'
The Brompton Series of Matthiola incana represents the classic 'Brompton Stock', a biennial or short-lived perennial highly valued for its heavenly clove-like scent. These plants produce sturdy, upright spikes densely packed with double or single flowers in a romantic palette of rose, mauve, white, and violet. Their grey-green, felted foliage provides a soft backdrop to the vivid blooms. In UK gardens, they are quintessential members of a scented border or a dedicated cutting garden, as the blooms last exceptionally well in a vase. They are fully hardy (H4) but demand excellent drainage to survive wet British winters; waterlogging is their primary enemy. Sown in mid-summer, they develop a strong root system before flowering the following spring and early summer. They perform best in a sheltered, sunny spot where their perfume can linger in the air.
