Crab Apple 'Mokum'
'Mokum' is an outstanding ornamental Crab Apple that offers multiple seasons of interest. In spring, it is draped in beautiful, large, purplish-pink flowers that emerge alongside the young foliage. The leaves themselves are a striking bronze-purple when they first appear, later maturing to a dark, lustrous green with a purple tinge. In autumn, the tree is laden with small, reddish-purple fruits that persist well into the winter, providing food for birds. The autumn leaf colour is a reliable, glowing orange-red. It has an upright, slightly spreading habit, making it suitable for medium-sized gardens. It is a very hardy tree (H6) and shows good resistance to common apple diseases like scab and mildew, which can plague other cultivars. It thrives in any well-drained, fertile soil and prefers a sunny site to maximise flower and fruit production. This cultivar is an excellent choice for a specimen lawn tree or as part of a mixed border.
