Crab Apple 'Indian Magic'
'Indian Magic' is a highly decorative small tree that provides exceptional interest for much of the year. In spring, it is smothered in large, dark pink flowers that fade to a softer rose-pink. The foliage is initially reddish-purple, turning dark green in summer and then a vibrant orange-red in autumn. However, its most striking feature is its massive crop of small, elongated fruits. These berries turn from orange to a brilliant, shiny red and persist on the branches long after the leaves have fallen, often remaining until after Christmas or until the birds finish them. It has a graceful, rounded to spreading habit. It is very hardy (H6) and shows good resistance to common diseases. It is a fantastic choice for a wildlife garden, providing nectar for bees in spring and essential winter food for birds. It grows well in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil and prefers a position in full sun to ensure a heavy crop of fruit.
