Apple 'Rev. W. Wilks'

Named after a former Secretary of the RHS, this is an outstanding early culinary apple that has been a staple of UK gardens since 1904. It produces very large, pale green fruits that are occasionally striped with red. When cooked, it collapses into a light, fluffy, pale-colored puree with a delicious, sweet-tart flavor that requires very little sugar. The tree is notable for its compact and manageable growth habit, making it an ideal choice for smaller gardens or for growing on dwarfing rootstocks. It is a very heavy and reliable cropper, often fruiting from a very young age. This variety has particularly beautiful large blossoms. It is remarkably hardy (H6) and has good resistance to scab, making it well-suited to the wetter parts of the UK. It prefers a sunny site in fertile, well-drained soil. Harvest begins in August.
