Apple 'Red Windsor'

A superb dessert apple variety developed in the UK, 'Red Windsor' (originally 'Alkmene') is a sport of 'Cox's Orange Pippin' that is much easier to grow in the typically damp British weather. It is a compact tree with a neat, restrained habit, making it ideal for small gardens and container growing. It is notably hardy and shows excellent resistance to both scab and mildew, two common issues for UK apple growers. In spring, it produces an abundance of pretty white flowers. The fruit is medium-sized and almost completely covered in a deep, attractive red flush. The skin is crisp and the flesh is firm, honeyed, and aromatic, very similar to 'Cox' but with a punchier, tangy finish. It is an early-season variety, usually ready for picking in late September and maintaining its quality for several weeks. It is also a very reliable and heavy cropper.
