Apple (American Mother) 'Mother'
Despite its name, this variety is highly regarded in the UK and was a recipient of the RHS First Class Certificate. 'Mother' is a dessert apple producing medium-sized, conical fruit with a brilliant red flush over yellow. The flesh is creamy-white, tender, and possesses a remarkable 'vanilla-ice-cream' aroma and sweet flavour. It is ready for harvest in late September and is best eaten shortly thereafter. The tree is moderately vigorous with an upright habit. It is not self-fertile and requires a partner from flowering group 4. It is particularly noted for its beautiful, large pink-and-white blossoms. While hardy, it requires a warm, sunny, and sheltered location to truly bring out the characteristic vanilla flavour. It is a classic choice for the connoisseur's garden, offering a unique sensory experience that modern supermarket varieties cannot match.
