Apple 'Katy'
Originally from Sweden (where it is known as 'Katja'), 'Katy' has become one of the most popular early-season dessert apples in the UK. It is incredibly reliable, hardy, and an vigorous grower, producing heavy crops even in less-than-perfect conditions. The fruit is typically medium-sized, with a bright red flush over a green-yellow base. The flesh is white, crisp, and very juicy with a refreshing, slightly acidic flavour. It is ready for picking in early September and is best eaten fresh from the tree, as it does not store for long. Its juice is also exceptional. The tree is an excellent pollinator for many other varieties due to its abundant and long-lasting blossom. It is in pollination group 3 and is partially self-fertile. Its resistance to pests and diseases is generally good. 'Katy' is highly recommended for Northern gardens and more exposed sites due to its Scandinavian origins and overall robustness. It thrives in most garden soils.
