Apple 'Howgate Wonder'

Originating from the Isle of Wight in the early 20th century, 'Howgate Wonder' is famed for producing some of the largest apples in the UK. This culinary variety bears massive, green fruits flushed with red stripes that retain their shape well when cooked, making them ideal for baking and exhibition. The flesh is fine-textured, juicy, and fairly sweet for a cooker. The tree is exceptionally vigorous and produces a heavy crop with reliable regularity. Because of its size and vigour, it is often grown on dwarfing rootstocks like M9 or M26 in smaller gardens. It is a triploid variety, meaning it needs two different pollination partners to set fruit. The white-pink blossom is attractive and appears in mid-season. Extremely hardy and robust, it stands up well to the British weather, provided it has plenty of space and a sunny position.
