Apple 'Bountiful'

'Bountiful' is an aptly named culinary apple, prized for its exceptionally heavy crops and its ability to cook into a delicious, delicately flavoured purée. It was bred at East Malling and is a cross between 'Cox's Orange Pippin' and 'Lane's Prince Albert'. The fruit is large, round, and pale green with a soft orange-red blush. Unlike the more famous 'Bramley', 'Bountiful' is a diploid and is self-fertile, which makes it much easier to grow in a garden setting as it doesn't require multiple partners. Additionally, it has a more compact and manageable habit than 'Bramley', making it suitable for smaller spaces. The fruit is ready for picking in late September and has the excellent quality of holding its shape when cooked lightly or breaking down into a smooth fluff with longer cooking. The flavour is sweet enough that it requires less added sugar than many other cooking apples. It also has good disease resistance, particularly to mildew, and is a reliable performer in most UK regions.
