Mahonia 'Cabaret'

'Cabaret' is a modern and exceptionally elegant Mahonia that offers a refined alternative to the larger, more aggressive species. This compact, evergreen shrub features handsome, architectural foliage made up of leathery, blue-green leaflets that lack the sharp spines of many other Mahonias. In late summer and early autumn, it produces upright racemes of bright orange-red buds that open into small, fragrant yellow flowers. This unique colour combination is quite striking and provides late-season interest for pollinators. The flowers are followed by attractive blue-black berries in winter. Growing to about 1 metre in height and width, 'Cabaret' is perfect for smaller gardens or for adding structure to a shaded border. It is hardy (H4) and performs best in partial to full shade in moist, well-drained soil. It is a slow-growing, low-maintenance plant that requires only the occasional removal of dead or spent flower spikes to keep it looking its best.
