Saucer Magnolia 'Lennei'
'Lennei' is one of the most magnificent cultivars of the Saucer Magnolia, cherished for its large, fleshy, goblet-shaped flowers. In mid to late spring, the bare branches are smothered in spectacular blooms that are deep purple-magenta on the outside and creamy-white within. The flowering period is slightly later than many other Magnolias, often helping it escape the worst of the late frosts, though a sheltered spot is still recommended to protect the delicate petals. It grows into a large, spreading deciduous shrub or small tree with a rounded silhouette. The foliage consists of broad, dark green leaves that provide an attractive canopy through summer. It thrives in moist, well-drained, loamy soil, preferably slightly acidic or neutral. In the UK, it is a quintessential specimen for a front garden or a prominent border where its dramatic spring display can be fully appreciated.
