Star Magnolia 'Royal Star'
A slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree that is one of the joys of the early spring garden. 'Royal Star' is a particularly fine cultivar, producing larger and more numerous flowers than the species. The blooms are star-shaped, pure white, and consist of many narrow petals, emerging from silky, silver-grey buds before the leaves appear. They have a delicate, sweet fragrance. Because it is slow-growing and has a compact, rounded habit, it is an excellent choice for smaller gardens or even a large pot. It is fully hardy but, like many early-blooming Magnolias, its flowers can be susceptible to damage from late spring frosts; therefore, a sheltered position is advisable. It prefers neutral to acidic, moisture-retentive soil and a sunny or partially shaded spot. It provides a stunning, luminous focal point in March and April.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, neutral to acid soil.
Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
Flowering: Mar, Apr.
