Tulip Magnolia 'Galaxy'
'Galaxy' is a stunning deciduous magnolia that is particularly well-suited to smaller gardens due to its narrow, upright, and compact habit. It is a hybrid between Magnolia liliflora 'Nigra' and Magnolia sprengeri 'Diva'. In mid to late spring, slightly later than many other magnolias (which helps the blooms avoid late frost damage), it produces a spectacular display of large, tulip-shaped flowers. The blossoms are a rich, reddish-purple on the outside and a paler pink-white on the inside, and they possess a delicate, pleasant fragrance. The foliage is large, dark green, and creates a lush appearance throughout the summer. 'Galaxy' is hardy to H6 and performs best in a sheltered spot away from strong winds. It thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and prefers neutral to acidic conditions. Its tidy, vertical growth makes it a perfect specimen for a lawn or as a dramatic feature at the back of a large border. It is a high-impact, low-maintenance choice.
