Cucumber Tree
A stately and impressive deciduous magnolia, growing into a large tree with a broad, conical crown, eventually reaching 15-25m tall and 8-12m wide. Fully hardy (H6), it prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. In late spring/early summer, it produces greenish-yellow, tulip-shaped flowers, which are attractive but often hidden by the large leaves. It gets its common name from the green, cucumber-like fruits that mature to red. The large, oval leaves turn yellow in autumn. A good shade tree for large gardens or parkland.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist, well-drained, acidic.
Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
