Chinese Honeysuckle

Lonicera tragophylla is a magnificent deciduous climber that produces some of the largest flowers of any honeysuckle. These tubular, bright golden-yellow blooms are held in large, terminal clusters and can be up to 8cm long. While it lacks the fragrance of many other honeysuckles, its visual impact is unparalleled. It is particularly valuable for UK gardeners because it thrives in partial to full shade, making it perfect for brightening up a north-facing wall or a woodland garden. The foliage is a handsome glaucous green, with the upper leaves often fused around the stem. It is fully hardy (H6) and once established, it is a vigorous grower, potentially reaching 6 metres. It requires moisture-retentive soil and does not like to dry out. Pruning is rarely needed except to keep it within its allotted space, which should be done in early spring or immediately after flowering.

Sun: Partial shade to full shade.

Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
