Box-leaved HoneysuckleBase 'Maigrun'
'Maigrun' (also known as 'Maygreen') is a superior cultivar of Lonicera nitida, often chosen over the species for its more compact, uniform growth and its vibrant, fresh-green foliage. It is an excellent, fast-growing evergreen alternative to Buxus for low to medium-sized hedges. The tiny, glossy leaves are held on stiff branches, allowing the hedge to be clipped into very precise, formal shapes or even topiary. While it produces tiny, inconspicuous cream flowers in spring, its primary value is as a neat, reliable hedging plant. It is very easy to establish and will grow in almost any soil condition, from sandy to heavy clay, as long as it is not waterlogged. It is also quite shade-tolerant. Because of its rapid growth rate, it will require clipping two or three times a year to keep it looking sharp. It is generally very hardy and resilient, making it a "fail-safe" choice for many hedging projects.
