Box-leaved Honeysuckle

Lonicera nitida 'Baggesen's Gold' is a very popular and versatile evergreen shrub, prized for its bright, colourful foliage. It features tiny, ovate, brilliant golden-yellow leaves on a dense, bushy framework of arching branches. The colour is most intense on new growth and in full sun; in deeper shade, the foliage turns a more chartreuse green. This shrub is an excellent, faster-growing alternative to box (Buxus) for low hedging, topiary, or as a bright splash of colour in a mixed border. It is very hardy (H6) and can tolerate severe pruning, making it easy to maintain in a specific shape. It is also quite tolerant of poor soils and urban atmospheric pollution. Though it occasionally produces tiny, insignificant creamy-white flowers followed by small purple berries, it is grown almost exclusively for its foliage. To maintain the best form and colour, it should be clipped two or three times during the growing season. Its resilience and bright appearance make it a garden favourite.
