Cardinal flower
Lobelia cardinalis is a sensational perennial that provides some of the most intense red flowers available for UK gardens. The flowers are a brilliant, vivid scarlet, held in dense, upright spikes that can reach up to 90cm in height. The foliage is typically a deep green, though some forms can have bronzed leaves. Native to North American wetlands, it thrives in moist to boggy conditions, making it an ideal choice for pond edges or damp areas of the garden where other plants might struggle. It is relatively short-lived but often self-seeds in the right conditions. Despite its exotic appearance, it is surprisingly hardy, although it may benefit from a winter mulch in colder regions. It is a magnet for bees and, in its native habitat, hummingbirds. It looks particularly effective when planted in large groups to create a bold splash of colour. It prefers a position in full sun to partial shade, provided the soil remains consistently moist.
