Lilyturf 'Variegata'
Liriope muscari 'Variegata' is a highly prized evergreen perennial that brings both texture and colour to the garden floor. It forms dense, tufted clumps of arching, grass-like leaves, each strikingly edged with bright creamy-yellow. This variegation is excellent for brightening up darker corners of the garden. In late summer and autumn, when many other plants are beginning to fade, it produces stiff spikes of violet-purple flowers that closely resemble grape hyacinths. These are followed by attractive black berries. It is a slow-growing but very effective ground cover that works well when planted in groups or as an edging plant. It is remarkably resilient, tolerating drought, salt spray, and deep shade, though the leaf colour and flowering are best in partial shade. It is hardy down to H5. Old foliage should be cut back to the ground in early spring just before new growth appears to keep the plant looking fresh and vibrant. It is resistant to most pests including slugs.
Sun: Partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
