Brown's Lily

A truly majestic and rare lily species that brings an air of sophistication to the late summer garden. Lilium brownii produces large, fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that are creamy-white on the inside and a striking brownish-purple on the external ribs. It typically grows to about 1 metre in height. This species requires a well-drained but moist soil, preferably acidic to neutral, as it can be sensitive to lime. In the UK, it should be planted in a sheltered spot where it can receive full sun or very light partial shade, with its 'feet in the shade and head in the sun'. It is generally hardy (H4-H5) but benefits from a thick mulch in winter to protect the bulb from excessive wet and hard frosts. The intoxicating scent is particularly strong in the evening, making it an excellent choice for planting near a patio or seating area where the fragrance can be fully appreciated during summer nights.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained, humus-rich acidic to neutral soil.

Hardiness: H4 — down to −10°C.

Flowering: Jul, Aug.
