Lavender 'Silver Sands'
A stunning hybrid lavender that stands out for its exceptionally silver, woolly foliage, making it a "bright" addition to the garden even when not in flower. 'Silver Sands' forms a neat, dome-shaped mound of soft, silver-grey leaves that are broader and more velvety than those of English lavender. In mid to late summer, it produces chunky, dark violet-purple flower spikes on long stems, creating a striking contrast against the pale foliage. This variety is generally more tolerant of humidity than some silver-leaved plants but still requires excellent drainage and a sunny, open position to prevent rot. It is rated H4, so it should survive most UK winters if not waterlogged. Prune in late August by cutting back the flower stems and about 2cm of the current year's growth to maintain a compact shape. It is a fantastic plant for sensory gardens, paths, or as a focal point in a silver-themed border.
