Persian Everlasting Pea

Lathyrus rotundifolius is a delightful perennial climber that is far less common than the standard Everlasting Pea (L. latifolius). It is sought after for its unique flower colour—a striking, warm terracotta-orange or brick-red that is rare in the pea family. The flowers are borne in small clusters and appear early in the season, often starting in May. The plant has charming, rounded, blue-green foliage and climbs via tendrils, typically reaching a height of about 1.5 to 2 metres. This makes it ideal for growing through mid-sized shrubs or on a smaller garden obelisk. It is fully hardy (H7) and herbaceous, dying back to the ground each winter before re-emerging in spring. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny position. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant. Unlike the annual sweet pea, it lacks scent, but more than makes up for it with its unusual colour and reliable perennial habit. It is a perfect choice for an informal or cottage garden.
