Japanese Larch cultivar 'Stiff Weeper'
Larix kaempferi 'Stiff Weeper' is a unique deciduous conifer that provides high drama in the garden. As a larch, it is one of the few conifers that sheds its needles in winter. This cultivar is typically top-grafted onto a standard stem, resulting in a formal 'mop-head' tree with branches that weep vertically to the ground. In spring, it is covered in soft, tufts of light green needles, which turn a rich, golden-yellow in the autumn before falling. Throughout the winter, its bare, pendulous branches and small cones provide a striking silhouette. It is fully hardy (H6) and thrives in the British climate, preferring a sunny position and moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is an excellent choice for a focal point in a lawn or at the centre of a large container. Because it is deciduous, it offers a sense of seasonal change often missing from conifer-heavy landscapes. It is a visually arresting specimen that demands attention.
