Purple Dewplant
Lampranthus haworthii is a shrubby, succulent perennial that provides an explosion of colour. It has upright, woody stems and blue-green, three-sided succulent leaves. In early to mid-summer, the plant is almost entirely obscured by hundreds of shimmering, daisy-like, brilliant purple or magenta flowers that open in the sun and close in the late afternoon. It is relatively tender (H3) and is only likely to survive the winter outdoors in the most sheltered, coastal, frost-free parts of the UK, such as the South West. For most gardeners, it is a perfect summer 'bedding' succulent for containers or sunny balconies, which can be overwintered as cuttings or moved to a cool, bright frost-free room. It requires very little water once established and thrives in poor, sandy soil. Pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact, bushy shape and prevents the plant from becoming too leggy. It is a high-impact choice for a Mediterranean-style display.
