Cabbage Lettuce 'All the Year Round'
As its name suggests, 'All the Year Round' is a versatile and dependable butterhead lettuce that can be grown almost any time of year in the UK with proper management. It produces medium-sized, compact heads with soft, succulent, light-green leaves and a crisp, white heart. The flavor is mild and sweet, lacking any bitterness. It is a very old and reliable heritage cultivar that is particularly noted for its hardiness; it can tolerate both the heat of summer without bolting prematurely and the cooler temperatures of spring and autumn. For a continuous supply, it can be sown every few weeks from March through August. In milder parts of the UK, or with the protection of a cold frame or cloche, it can even be sown in autumn for a very early spring crop. Its compact habit makes it suitable for growing in containers or as a "catch crop" between slower-growing vegetables like leeks or brassicas.
