Lettuce (Cos) 'Parris Island Cos'
'Parris Island Cos' is a superb Romaine-type lettuce that is highly valued for its crisp texture and excellent disease resistance, particularly against mosaic virus. It forms large, upright heads with slightly ruffled, dark green outer leaves and a pale, crunchy heart. The flavor is sweet and mild, making it a perfect base for Caesar salads. In the UK, it is a reliable performer that is slower to bolt than many other varieties, allowing for a longer harvest period during the summer months. It can be grown from spring through to late summer, and even into autumn under glass. It prefers a moisture-retentive soil and a position that gets some shade during the hottest part of the day to prevent the leaves from becoming bitter. Regular watering is essential for maintaining its crispness. Rated H2 hardy, it is best suited for the main growing season but can be started early indoors or in a cold frame. Its uniform growth habit makes it a great choice for both garden beds and containers.
