Red Hot Poker 'Tawny King'

Kniphofia 'Tawny King' is a sophisticated and warmly coloured cultivar of the traditional Red Hot Poker. Unlike the more common bright red and yellow varieties, 'Tawny King' offers a more muted and elegant palette of dusky cream, amber, and bronzed orange. The flower spikes emerge from dark brown buds on tall, bronzed stems, reaching up to 1 metre in height. These architectural blooms rise above a dense clump of strap-like, arching green leaves. It is an excellent choice for adding vertical interest to a hot-coloured border or a contemporary prairie-style planting. Flowering from mid to late summer, it is a favourite of bees and butterflies. It thrives in full sun and prefers a well-drained, fertile soil. While it is hardy in most parts of the UK (H5), it appreciates a sheltered spot and a winter mulch in colder regions or heavy soils to protect the crown from excessive damp. It is a robust and long-lived perennial that makes a bold statement.
