Flaky Juniper 'Holger'
Juniperus squamata 'Holger' is a striking, dual-toned conifer that offers exceptional colour interest throughout the growing season. It has a spreading habit with semi-upright branches. The mature foliage is a beautiful silvery-blue, but the new growth in spring emerges a contrasting bright sulphur-yellow, giving the entire plant a shimmering, bicoloured appearance. This cultivar is very hardy (H6) and is an excellent choice for rock gardens, banks, or as a specimen shrub in a mixed border. It is relatively slow-growing and easy to maintain. Like most junipers, it requires excellent drainage and a sunny position to thrive; it can become leggy and lose its vibrant colour in too much shade. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and handles coastal conditions well. Its unusual colour combination and architectural spreading habit make it a standout plant for year-round garden interest. It is a tough, reliable performer across most of the UK.
