Juniper
Juniperus scopulorum, often known as Rocky Mountain Juniper, is a hardy and adaptable evergreen conifer native to western North America. It typically forms a narrow, upright, columnar or broadly conical shape, making it an excellent choice for a strong vertical accent in UK gardens, particularly where space is limited. It can reach an ultimate height of 5-10 metres with a spread of 1-3 metres, though growth is slow. Its foliage consists of scale-like, often glaucous blue-green leaves. This juniper thrives in full sun and well-drained, even poor, neutral to alkaline soils, showing remarkable tolerance to drought and exposed conditions. It is fully hardy, rated H7 by the RHS. Small, blue-black berries (cones) are produced on female plants, attracting birds.
