Common Juniper

The Common Juniper is a resilient and characterful evergreen conifer, native to the UK, offering fantastic versatility in the garden due to its variable habit, from prostrate to upright. Its prickly, needle-like foliage is typically green, often with a silvery-blue band. Fully hardy, it thrives in poor, shallow, well-drained soils, even chalky ones, and prefers full sun. While its 'flowers' are insignificant, female plants produce attractive, glaucous-blue, berry-like cones that mature over two years, used to flavour gin. It's an excellent choice for rock gardens, ground cover, or as a specimen in a naturalistic planting, providing year-round interest and resilience.
