Walnut 'Lara'

'Lara' is a relatively new walnut cultivar, gaining popularity in the UK for its earlier fruiting and more compact growth habit compared to traditional varieties, making it suitable for smaller gardens. It produces good crops of medium-sized, thin-shelled walnuts with excellent flavour, ripening in September. This variety is partially self-fertile but will benefit from a pollinator for increased yields. It forms a moderately vigorous tree with an attractive broad, rounded canopy. Walnuts require a sunny, open site with deep, fertile, and well-drained soil. Avoid frost pockets as young shoots can be vulnerable.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Deep, well-drained loam.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
