Red Jasmine
A unique and charming jasmine species that is one of the few to produce red flowers. This deciduous to semi-evergreen climber is relatively compact, reaching about 3-5 metres. In early summer, it produces small, fragrant, velvet-textured flowers that are a deep pink to dull red. These are followed in autumn by small, glossy black berries that persist into the winter. The foliage consists of small, lance-shaped, dark green leaves. While it is not as powerfully scented as the common white jasmine, it provides a distinctive colour and is a very hardy, easy-to-grow plant that is well-suited to the UK climate. It is a twining climber that requires support from a trellis or wires and is particularly effective when grown against a south-facing wall, which helps to maximise flower production. It is also surprisingly tolerant of partial shade. Pruning should be done after flowering to keep the plant within its allotted space and to encourage new, flowering growth for the next year.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil.
Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
Flowering: Jun, Jul.
