Shepherd's Scabious 'Blaulicht'
Jasione laevis 'Blaulicht' (Blue Light) is an attractive and easy-to-grow alpine that provides a vibrant splash of blue in early summer. It forms a low-growing mound of narrow, hairy, dark green leaves in rosettes. From these, numerous upright, wiry stems emerge to bear spherical, bright blue flower heads that resemble a cross between a Scabious and a globe thistle. This cultivar is noted for its particularly intense blue colour and its compact habit. It is native to the mountains of Europe and is well-adapted to the UK climate. It thrives in well-drained, acidic to neutral soils and enjoys a position in full sun. It is a fantastic choice for a rockery, a gravel garden, or the edge of a sunny border. The flowers are also very attractive to bees and butterflies, providing a valuable nectar source. It is fully hardy and generally maintenance-free other than removing dead heads.
Sun: Full sun.
Soil: Well-drained, neutral to acid soil.
